Swiss Steak Recipe

swiss steak This is my family's favorite Swiss Steak recipe containing beef steak and tomatoes.

The tomatoes help to tenderize the round steak.

Celery and onions add extra flavour.

Potatoes can be added near the end to make a complete meal.

Savoury Swiss Steak

½ cup (125 ml) flour
2 teaspoons (10 ml) dry mustard
salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons (30 ml) vegetable oil
1 (19 oz./540 ml) can tomatoes
1 cup (250 ml) sliced onions
½ cup (125 ml) chopped celery
3 carrots, chopped
2 tablespoons (30 ml) Worcestershire sauce
salt & pepper (second amount)

Combine flour, mustard, salt & pepper in a small bowl.
Sprinkle meat with mixture.

Pound mixture into steak (this is unnecessary if cooked in a slow cooker). Cut meat into serving portions.

Brown on both sides.
Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 1½ to 2 hours.

Makes 4 to 5 servings.
